Understanding EMS (Emergency Medical Services) in India

In many nations, the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department is still young or has yet to be introduced at a deeper level. The causes may differ from country to country, depending on the health-care legislation in place. Most developed countries use EMS and continue to improve their training methods with the help of experienced medical practitioners. EMS, on the other hand, is still relatively new in developing countries, including India.

What is an EMS (Emergency Medical Services)?

Emergency Medical Services are treatments provided to victims outside of a hospital setting in a timely manner until they are able to receive advanced medical treatment. As previously said, different countries have different perspectives on EMS and its application.

Ambulance Services ≠ Emergency Medical Services

Most people mistake ambulance services with emergency medical services, which is a frequent misperception. However, this is not the case. Almost all medical facilities, from multi-specialty hospitals to clinics, now have ambulances.

Emergency Medical Services includes Ambulance Services. Advanced medical equipment, a team of competent healthcare professionals, and additional people to assist with loading and handling are among the other components. To be more specific, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) represents a shift from a simple transportation system (ambulance service) to one in which actual medical care was provided in addition to transportation. To be more specific, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) represents a shift from a simple transportation system (ambulance service) to one in which actual medical care was provided in addition to transportation.

As a responsible training school, IIEMS also intends to contribute to the Ambulance Services. These services are managed by qualified EMTs at our BLS ACLS (AHA) training centre in India, which includes a simple transportation system with incorporated life-saving medical equipment. IIEMS is based in Kerala, with headquarters in Kottayam and regional offices in Kochi and Trivandrum.

Emergency Medical Services in India

Since 2009, India, as a developing country, has been exposed to the practise of EMS. There is no centralised agency in India that regulates EMS processes. As a result, the EMS models used differ from state to state within the United States. EMS is offered to most unions through a public-private partnership arrangement. Many states, including Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, have adopted this concept. Other states, like as Bihar, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi, have adopted similar models, which are run by non-government/private non-profit organisations.

Few problems for EMS in India

  • These are some of the most common issues confronted by India's emergency medical services. Even though there have been substantial advancements, these issues must still be addressed.

  • The majority of hospital emergency departments, particularly at public institutions, have inadequate facilities for dealing with patients in emergency situations.

  • Lack of training and training infrastructure for training health staff (public or private) and other stakeholders in medical emergency management/first aid

  • The new ERTS plans do not sit well with a fleet of existing government-owned ambulances (in terms of operational linkages and standardisation across fleet).

  • In India, there is no authorised central authority or legislation for integrating and developing EMS.

IIEMS, as an EMS contributor in India, aspires to improve Emergency Medical Care Training throughout the country, with a mission to provide skill courses for doctors and nurses. IIEMS has partnered with global EMS professionals to provide AHA Courses, Trauma Courses, and other emergency and disaster management courses.
