Highlights of 54th ATLS Course at IIEMS Ernakulam

Many courses providing skill training for medical professionals were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic's shutdown. At the same time, most medical professionals, such as doctors and nurses, were preoccupied with their jobs, which may have contributed to their inability to attend the classes. However, time is a factor, and experience counts, making this a tricky scenario.

Although most educational institutions have successfully transitioned to online learning, medical courses cannot be totally delivered online. You can probably figure out why! Medical professions are primarily on learning skills and involving living beings rather than machines who carry out procedures. This is why, whereas most fields of education were quick to embrace online learning, medicine took its time.

AHA Courses were eventually made available online and were formally approved by the American Heart Association. BLS ACLS Certification can be completed in a 3-day online course with practical's on the last day at the training site. However, this does not apply to the ATLS course.

The American College of Surgeons' ATLS Course focuses on improving the care of surgical patients who are in excruciating pain. Musculoskeletal problems affecting tissues, ligaments, or bones could be the source of discomfort. Accidents, burns, and climatic disasters can all cause agony. To summarize, trauma care training necessitates a thorough understanding of human anatomy as well as hands-on clinical experience.

IIEMS Ernakulam successfully conducted the 54th ATLS Course training under covid protocols, taking advantage of the small improvement in the pandemic scenario. This was a three-day trauma care training programme that doctors and physicians would find useful (MBBS, MD etc.). Trauma care is becoming more important in India in recent years. The collaborative efforts of the American College of Surgeons and Advanced Trauma Life Support in India have raised awareness among Indian medical practitioners.

The Indian Chapter of the American College of Surgeons is IIEMS, which is second only to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) (ACS). What began as a small group is now a global phenomenon, with its practices recognized by numerous health authorities around the world. IIEMS is also an official associate of the American Chemical Society.

Apart from the American College of Surgeons, IIEMS has ties with International Trauma Life Support Inc (USA), George Washington University (USA), North Shore Health Systems (USA), and All India Institute of Medical Science (India) (New Delhi, India).
